Colca canyon tour

(02days /01 night)

First day: 08.00 Pick up from your hotel.

On de way:

• Yura town with cement factory
• Pampa Cañahuas and Pampa de Arrieros : vicuñas and view of the backside of the Misti.
• Viscachani , stop to drink a coca tea, which is good for the altitude.
• Bofedales de Toccra natural rock formations.
Alpacas, llamas and lagoons with several bird species, sometimes flamingos can be seen.
• Crater of Chucura and permanent ice.
• The Mirador of the Andes (4800m) is the highest point of this trip. At this place there is a stop to appreciate the volcanic and desertic area. The volcanoes you can see from here are Misti, Chachani, Sabancaya (active), Ubinas, Mismi, Hualca Hualca and Ampato (all around 6000m).
• Chila mountains or Cordillera de Chila: On the Mismi, part of the Cordillera de Chila, the Monigote river begins, which is the origin of the Amazon river.
Arrival in the town Chivay in the afternoon. Accommodation in the hotel and lunch.
• Hot springs of la Calera in the afternoon. Optionally you can walk around.
• Folkloric show in the evening.

Second day: 06.00am Continental breakfast in the hotel.

• Cruz del condor where you can appreciate the flight of the condors. Also the impressive geographical scene, created by the Colca river can be admired. After approximately one hour, the tour will come back to Chivay stopping in the typical villages of:
• Pinchollo, Maca and Yanque.
• Miradores of Chocotetico and Antahuilque where the stone mock ups can be seen that Collaguas people have used to test which parts of the canyon are suitable for cultivation. This is a good place to appreciate the andean valley of the Colca.
• Hanging pre-Inca tombs.
• Lunch in the village of Chivay and return to Arequipa.

At the Tambo Viejo there is a luggage storage where you can leave your luggage safely, during this excursion. (1 sol per bag)

What to take with you?

• T-shirt. During daytime. (the colca has a very dry and sunny climate)
• Warm jacket for the night (the temperature drops to 0°C.)
• Swimming clothes and towel.
• Sun block and sun glasses.

****In Chivay you can buy water and everything that is necessary****

TIP: Go to the market area at night and try a cooked drink called "Emoliente". It is made of medicinal herbs. It tastes good and it is also very good against the cold. Local people eat and drink there till late in the evening.

Cactus fruit (tuna) is a delicous sweet fruit. It helps against thirst. The fruits have many colors: green, red, yellow, orange and even purple.

 

Extra information about the Colca Canyon

The colca valley is located in one of the driest areas in the world.

This area was inhabited by the ethnic groups of Collaguas and the Cabanas and in this dry and very accidental landscape, they made a green fertile valley, where many kinds of potatoes, corn (maiz) and fruits are cultivated.

Around this valley there are 14 colonial villages, the spanish were here during the conquista.

The condor is the largest bird in the andes. When they open their wings they can reach upto 2 meters from wing to wing. They can survive 14 days without eating.

The region of Arequipa including Colca, is located in a very volcanic area, that is why there are many hot springs in different places.
